October, November and December: the trifecta of months filled with holidays that are all about consuming mass amounts of sweets. Think about it, you go from halloween candy, to pumpkin pie, to a number of specialty desserts for Christmas. If you were ever going to get a cavity there is a good chance it will be during this time of the year. To avoid having to shamefully come to the dentist in January complaining of tooth pain there are a few steps you can take.
- Keep A Balanced Diet
Although it is tempting to go off the deep end during the holiday season, make sure you continue to eat healthy meals to counteract the damage all the sugar can potentially do to your teeth. - Be Particular About The Sweets You Eat
Try to limit your intake of sweets that tend to stick to your teeth. Candy is especially something that should be avoided at all costs. A piece here and there won’t do much harm but consuming large portions of candy will surely cause some issues where your teeth are concerned. - Brush, Brush, Brush
If you know you are in for an entire day of eating rich foods (cough, cough Thanksgiving) make sure to brush as soon as the meal is over. Removing bacteria from your teeth immediately rather than letting it sit on your teeth will lessen your risk for cavities. - Travel With Your Toothbrush
If you are visiting family for the holidays make sure to bring your toothbrush(and floss) with you and keep them somewhere accessible. Being able to brush at a moment’s notice is always a good idea.
